Marilyn Spanier Interview

Today I have the opportunity to speak with Marilyn Spanier.

Hi Marilyn! I would like to take this time to welcome you to Fallen Angel Reviews! I can not thank you enough for leaving your busy schedule to visit with us.

Would you like to begin by telling us something about Marilyn?

I was brought up in the Bronx, New York, by very loving and hard working-- working class parents and ever since I could remember, I wanted to be an actress. One of my happiest childhood memories was the day that I was accepted into the High School of Pe rforming Arts. After college, I worked as a professional actor as well as other assorted jobs. At that time, I met and fell deeply in love with an incredible guy, who I am still happily married to.

What inspired you to begin writing?

I always enjoyed writing short stories. I had such a vivid imagination and loved creating imaginary scenarios. I was intrigued with writing poetry when in college. After I met my husband, I was inspired to write a screenplay. It's about a female spy and it's entitled, Love and Revenge. My Mother-in-law inspired me or rather nudged me into writing romance novels. She is an avid reader of the romance genre and kept nudging me to write them. One day, I borrowed some of her books and got hooked.

Have you ever had to change anything like a title or a character because the editor suggested it would be best for the story?

No, I've been lucky. No one has ever disputed my titles or anyth ing about my characters.

What would you say is your favorite genre to read or write?

My favorite genres to read are romance, science fiction, mystery, self empowerment, and mystical and my favorite genres to write are romance, mystery, fantasy and all books I write have strong women or women who find empowerment.

Does your writing require you to do much research?

It depends on what I'm writing about. For instance, part of the screenplay I wrote took place in Monaco. Since I had never been there, I had to do extensive research to be able to describe it. For my romance novels, I researched without researching. I lived in Spain for nine months and in Mexico for three months, so my research of these countries was through living there. STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT takes place in Spain, and FOREVER........ takes place in Mexico.

Do you get many interruptions during your writing process? And i f so, how do you stay focused so not to lose your train of thought in your writing?

I am a very unconventional writer. I usually write in long hand and then later on, I type it on my computer. I usually write when I am walk/running on the elliptical machine at the gym. It works for me. When I do write on my computer, I like to write with light instrumental music in the background.

Who is your favorite author?

There are so many wonderful writers in all genres, but the ones that come to mind now are: Dean Koontz, John Grisham, Nancy Taylor-Rosenberg, Robin Cook, Dr. Wayne Dyer and James Redfield.

Do you have a certain schedule that you follow when writing?

I don't have a schedule. I don't like to force my writing. I write when I feel open and inspired. I usually find myself wanting to write when I am on an aerobic machine at the gym. I find that I create a lot when I am out and about. Then I'll t ry to write it down as soon as I can.

What would your readers be surprised to know about you?

I created a child's product that I patented. I did the patent by myself, without an attorney, so it was certainly a learning experience. It was difficult, but very rewarding when it was finally approved by the US Patent Office.

What plans for writing do you have for the future?

I am currently writing a new romance novel and I am considering turning my screenplay into novel form. I think it would be a great novel.

Do you ever get writers block?

All the time! When I get writers block, I stop writing and try to do something interesting ---- something to help stir up my creative juices. I don't think anyone should force themselves to write.

Do you have an agent or ever considered getting one?

I don't currently have an agent. There are so many ways to reac h publishers these days that I haven't found it necessary, but I would consider an agent, if I thought it would be beneficial.

How did you find your publisher?

A friend of mine recommended her publisher to me.

Do you have a website?

Yes! It's http://www.marilyn-bob.biz
